Manual Handling Instructions

file_load.php?FID_load=952008

Manual handling guidelines aim to prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) by eliminating or minimizing hazardous tasks through good work design, such as using mechanical aids and reducing heavy lifting, bending, or twisting. Key principles include assessing risks (LITE: Load, Individual, Task, Environment), using proper techniques (straight back, bent knees), and providing training. Safe Work Australia +3

Key Principles of Manual Handling

  • Elimination and Substitution: The best approach is to design tasks so manual handling is unnecessary, such as using trolleys, forklifts, or automating processes.

Risk Assessment (LITE)

  • Load: Is it too heavy, bulky, or unstable?Individual: Does the person have the strength, training, and capability?
  • Task: Does it involve repetitive bending, twisting, or reaching?
  • Environment: Is the floor slippery, uneven, or cramped?

Safe Lifting Techniques:

  • Position feet shoulder-width apart for a stable base.
  • Bend at the knees, not the waist.
  • Keep your back straight and maintain a neutral spine.
  • Keep the load close to your body, specifically at waist height, to reduce strain.
  • Avoid twisting; pivot with your feet instead.
